Please leave enough time for parking. We are a busy clinic and do not want to cut into your treatment time. We are on the 15 bus line and close to the Max. There is on-street parking, but depending on the time of day, it can be hard to get a spot near the building. There is a SmartPark 1.5 blocks south on SW 10th and Yamhill where it is easy to park. 

The number of acupuncture treatments you need varies greatly for a few reasons: your reason for coming in, your overall health, and your treatment goals. Every patient comes in at a different place in their journey: they have different health concerns, different goals, and live in a uniquely different body, making one patient’s care differ from another’s. 

For example: If a new patient comes in because they threw out their back, they may only need to come in a few times to have their pain resolved and their mobility restored. If, however, during the intake we discover that this is the third time in a year that their back has ‘gone out,’ they will likely have continued care over the next few weeks or months to address the underlying cause of the back problem. In the second instance, the goal of care is not just to minimize acute pain and restore mobility; the goal in that case is ALSO to prevent the issue from reoccurring.

Here is another example: You are coming in because you have had 3 failed embryo transfers and this time you want to do everything possible to improve the success of the next transfer. You’ve heard acupuncture can help so you make an appointment. Your transfer is in one week. Because of the time constraints in this instance, we cannot work on the underlying causes that could be interfering with implantation failure, so the focus of treatment might be on minimizing anxiety, and increasing blood flow to the pelvis, and we might see you twice before the transfer. If that same patient instead came in 3 months prior to the next transfer, we would have time to work on any underlying inflammatory issues or hormone imbalances that might be going on, so we would work together throughout that timeframe.

At our clinic, we understand that navigating insurance coverage can feel frustrating, confusing, and at times completely overwhelming. Many insurance plans do include acupuncture benefits, so it can be surprising to find out those benefits don’t always apply to the care you’re seeking. 

We want to take a moment to explain why we can’t always bill your insurance, and why that’s not always in our control. 

Coverage depends heavily on why you’re seeking care. Insurance companies don’t just look at whether you’re seeing a licensed acupuncturist, they also consider: 

• The diagnosis or condition you’re being treated for
• Whether that diagnosis is considered “medically necessary” by your insurance plan 
• Whether acupuncture is a covered treatment for your specific plan 
• The providers’ network status with your insurance plan

Every Plan is Different. Even within the same insurance company, individual plans can vary widely in what they cover. For example: 

• One patient with a Regence BlueCross BlueShield plan may have generous acupuncture coverage for a wide range of conditions. 
• Another patient with a different Regence plan might only be allowed a handful of visits per year, and only for specific pain diagnoses. 

Unfortunately, there is no universal list of what is and is not covered. 

“But I called my insurance, and they said acupuncture is covered…” We hear this a lot. And we believe you- insurance reps often give general information about benefits, but may not dig into diagnosis-specific limitations, or billing codes we’re required to use.

We are on your side, and will always be as transparent as we can be. If we know that your reasoning for coming in is unlikely to be covered, we’ll tell you. Please know that while we will work with your insurance whenever possible, we cannot bill for codes that are not the focus of care. What that means is, if you’re coming in for fertility support, and your insurance won’t cover that diagnosis, but you occasionally have back pain which is a covered code, we cannot bill for the back pain just because it is covered. Not only is that illegal, but it also dilutes the treatment: if you are here for fertility, we want to be able to fully focus on that.

When you come into our clinic, Jasmine at our front desk will go over your insurance benefits with you. She will review and help you understand how your acupuncture benefits align with your treatment plan.  

If we cannot bill your insurance, we offer time-of-service discounts and can provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement if your plan allows it. 

Insurance is tricky, and no one knows that better than us! This is part of the reason we offer free consultations. It allows us to find out more about your health concerns and your particular insurance plan so that we can really understand all of the options and costs that will be included with care. Our goal is always to be as transparent as possible about your individual care needs so you can make an informed decision about your health.

Please note that outside of office hours we have an answering service that takes calls. They are unable to schedule/reschedule appointments, but they will get the information to us so that we can call you back during office hours.

We understand that life happens and schedules change. If you need to cancel your appointment, please do so at least 24 hours in advance to avoid our late cancellation fee. 

Appointments cancelled within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment time are subject to a $60 late cancellation fee. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. This helps us keep our schedule running smoothly and allows us to support all of our patients with the care they need.
